How to play

Four players in two partnerships play with just the 9, 10, J, Q, K and A of each suit. Everyone gets 5 cards and the top card of the leftover kitty is turned face-up.

Starting left of the dealer, each player may order that card's suit up as trump (the dealer picks the card up and discards one) or pass; if all four pass, each may instead name any OTHER suit — and the dealer must name one if everyone else passed.

The team that chose trump are the makers. The Jack of trump (right bower) is the highest trump and the other Jack of the same colour (left bower) is second — it counts as a trump for following suit.

Play 5 tricks: follow the led suit if you can; the highest trump wins, otherwise the highest card of the led suit. Makers taking 3 or 4 tricks score 1 point, all 5 (a march) scores 2, and fewer than 3 hands the DEFENDERS 2 (euchred!). First team to 10 wins.
